Wrench It Up > Academy > DIY > A Quick Guide To Find And Fix A Sewer Gas Odor
Sewer smell is toxic and dangerous. It can be identified by a gassy, musty, or rotten egg odor. The sewer gas comes from hydrogen sulfide in sewer water mixing with air outside your home or business. Sewer gas can also contain methane and carbon dioxide. Here are some tips to help you diagnose the problem and possibly fix it.
First, check if there is a source of sewer smell inside your home or business that you could fix yourself. Some common problems include:
– Sewer drain traps are filled with water.
– Sewer floor drains have small leaks or cracks that allow sewer gas to come up into your home.
– The venting system for a washer has not been installed properly and is now leaking sewer gases inside your home.
– Sewer drain cleanout covers are missing, broken or installed incorrectly.
If you do not have any sources inside your home, then sewer gas may be coming from a sewer drain outside or in front of your house.
Sewer drainage systems are more complicated than they initially appear. Sewer gas can be coming from one of several places:
– Sewer drainage pipes may have tree roots growing inside, especially if there is a problem with your sewer line and it has not been cleaned in over four years (roots like to grow in moist soil).
– Sewer gas smell can also be coming from water around manholes. Most sewer systems use sewer manholes because it is much easier and faster to access sewer lines from there, especially for sewer cleaning and maintenance workers.
If you cannot locate source of sewer gas odor, the next step is to call a professional plumber near you.
They will use camera equipment to inspect drainpipes in your home or business and determine where sewer gas odor is coming from.
After inspection, plumber can recommend possible solutions for sewer odor including:
– Using drain snaking tool inside plumbing fixtures to clear the sewer line.
– Sewer line replacement.
Drain cleaning can be complicated and should only be performed by a professional plumber who has the necessary equipment, skills, and knowledge.
