Wrench It Up > Academy > DIY > DIY Plumbing Made Easy: How To Replace A Fill Valve Without Calling A Plumber?
A running toilet can be an irritating issue that can also lead to a waste of water and a higher water bill. However, it is not necessary to hire a plumber to fix the problem. Replacing a filler valve can be a DIY plumbing project that can save you money.
Before you start, turn off the water supply to your toilet and flush the toilet to empty the tank. This step will prevent water from flowing while you are working on the filler valve.
To remove the old filler valve, disconnect the water supply line from the bottom of the tank and unscrew the plastic nut that secures the valve to the bottom of the tank. Lift the old filler valve out of the tank once the nut is removed.
To install the new filler valve, begin by placing the rubber gasket over the threaded shank of the valve. Insert the valve into the hole at the bottom of the tank, making sure that the gasket is centered and snug.
Secure the new filler valve in place by tightening the plastic nut underneath the tank. Do not over tighten the nut, or you may crack the porcelain tank. Connect the water supply line to the bottom of the filler valve and turn on the water supply.
To adjust the float on the new filler valve, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Different models may have different adjustment methods, so it is important to read the instructions that came with your valve.
Test the toilet by flushing it a few times to ensure that it is working correctly. If it is, you have successfully replaced the filler valve on your own!
