Wrench It Up > Academy > DIY > Drain Swap: How To Replace Your Vanity Sink Drain In 7 Simple Steps
A clogged or damaged sink drain can be frustrating to deal with. Luckily, replacing your vanity sink drain is a relatively simple DIY project that can save you money and hassle in the long run. Here are seven simple steps to replace your vanity sink drain:
1.Turn off the water supply. Before you start working on your sink drain, be sure to turn off the water supply to your sink. This will prevent any water from flowing while you are making the replacement.
2.Remove the old drain. Unscrew the retaining nut and gasket that hold the drain in place. You may need pliers to do this if the nut is particularly tight. Once the nut is removed, pull the old drain out of the sink.
3.Clean the sink and drain hole. Use a mild cleaning solution and a soft cloth to clean any debris or buildup from the sink and drain hole. This will ensure a good seal for the new drain.
4.Apply plumber’s putty. Roll a small amount of plumber’s putty into a thin rope and apply it to the underside of the flange of the new drain. This will create a watertight seal between the drain and the sink.
5.Insert the new drain. Place the new drain into the sink and make sure it is centered in the hole. Tighten the retaining nut and gasket underneath the sink to hold the drain in place.
6.Connect the drain pipe. Attach the tailpiece of the drain to the drain pipe under the sink. Use slip-joint pliers to tighten the connections securely.
7.Test the new drain. Turn on the water supply and let the water run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks or drips around the drain and make sure the water is flowing freely.
